2017 QLED versus OLED debate: who is the real winner?

Time:2017-07-04 Views:5967
QLED and oleds, though only one letter bad, have a huge difference in technology and marketing. In 2017, samsung‘s new launch of QLED TV, which lets LG‘s "O" and samsung‘s "Q", will again be pushed back into the future of the technology debate. What are the historical origins and technical differences between the two technologies? What are the market evaluations and future prospects? Let‘s talk about it.

The development history of samsung and LG in the TV field is basically the development of the TV technology. CRT - PDP - lcd-oled at each stage the two companies have experienced or are experiencing. It is worth mentioning that samsung and LG have both introduced 55 "OLED TVS in 2012 and tried to commercialize in 2013, but within a year, the biggest of OLED supporters samsung shifted its strategy.

Of course, the reasons for this include samsung and LG‘s patent battles over the core waterproofing technology of OLED panels, but more of samsung‘s strategic and flexible personality.

In 2014, samsung focused on 4K LCD TV, released SUHD TV in 2015 and QLED TV in 2017. To occupy quantum dot technology, samsung has invested in the German company Nanosys, which has 300 patents on quantum dot technology, and bought QD Vision, a us quantum dot. At the same time, samsung has not given up on OLED technology entirely, and AMOLED in small sizes has grown rapidly.

LG has stuck to the OLED camp since 2012, improving technology and technology. In the research direction of OLED materials, LG chem has worked closely with sumitomo chemical, mitsubishi chemical, USA UDC, Covin and other companies to advance the development of the OLED materials industry.

So now we see the QLED and OLED competition, not just between samsung and LG, but the research, product and marketing group behind the two technologies.

Qleds are inherently different from oleds

To really understand the difference between "Q" and "O", you have to anatomically parse them.

The "ideal" QLED technology should be a quantum dot material that is active and light-emitting, and the application will not require backlighting and color filters on display devices. At the present stage, the "beta" is the distribution of the quantum dot film before the blue LED, forming a higher purity of the back light source, which brings more "pure" color expression through the liquid crystal molecules.

The "ideal" OLED technology should be an OLED organic material that produces the active glow and generates RGB trichromatic color. And at this stage "beta" is adopted W - OLED technology, OLED only served for the back of the illumination light source, but compared to the liquid crystal mechanical rotation, still has the absolute black and high contrast such characteristics.

In this way, the two technologies "ideal" are the properties of spontaneous light, QLED is the spontaneous light of inorganic materials, OLED is organic material spontaneous light, it is very forward-looking display technology. But why are there beta versions on the market?

Actually made "ideal" version of OLED technology have, 2014 CES SONY OLED TV is the "ideal" version, there are many broadcast of display devices, including samsung AMOLED is "ideal". But the market is a place that pays attention to efficiency and cost, w-oleds have better cost advantage and service life than RGB OLED, which is more suitable for market promotion.

The "ideal" version of QLED is slightly slower, but after all, it is the "late generation" of OLED, and the room for improvement is still big, and the market will give more patience.

When you‘re done with the structure, let‘s talk about the actual effect (versus the beta version on the market).

Brightness: Q win. The LED backlight adopted by QLED can further improve the brightness by using high brightness LED modules and improved backlight structure. For example, the peak brightness of SONY‘s dynamic backlight master edition can reach 4000nit, and samsung‘s QLED can reach 2000nit, and it can guarantee that 15s will not attenuate. However, the characteristics of OLED organic glow, high brightness is bound to be the attenuation of organic luminescence, resulting in unrecoverable physical damage.

Black level: O win. It‘s no doubt that OLED can turn off the backlight completely. QLED also has local control technology, but not every pixel is controlled (except SONY Z9D).

Refresh rate & response time: O win. The liquid crystal molecules of QLED have a mechanical rotation after receiving the electrical signal, and OLED is like a light bulb, which instantly completes the closing of the switch.

HDR: Q win. QLED has a higher brightness, so in the same color depth and grayscale, QLED will have better dynamic range performance.

Color field: Q win. Everyone is a beta, both backlit and color filters, but the spectra of quantum dots have a natural advantage.

Visual Angle: O win. OLED can even close to 180 °.

Uniformity: O win. OLED alone controls the characteristics of each pixel light, which is sufficient to defeat the image uniformity of the QLED led by the local control light.

Gray: Q win. Dark detail and color transition problems whether w-oled or RGB OLED should be an unavoidable problem. Because OLED USES PWM or DC dimming mode. When the color number of the panel reaches 10bit, which is 1024, it is rather difficult to imagine the delicate control of the liquid crystal molecules.

Power loss: Q win. OLED saves electricity in a black scene, but in normal use, the same size OLED will be larger than QLED power.

With so many comparisons, the beta QLED and oleds are a lot harder to tell. No wonder the two camps are evenly matched.

Q and O who are the winners?

Finally we have to answer the last question. But the answer may disappoint. Why do we have to make a difference? The flexible screen technology that everyone CARES about, QLED and OLED + printing technology can be used to make ultra-thin flexible screen. Is it ok to co-exist? It‘s not just the beta version that is in a state of peaceful coexistence, it‘s going to be an ideal version in the future, and it‘s going to be a peaceful coexistence.

There are different ways to implement the display technology, but no one is omnipotent and always has a certain complementary relationship. Like online and offline in business, 3D and VR in film and television, traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine are all coexisting.

However, it is also possible to divide the winner, because the plasma is dried to the liquid crystal. What is the origin of this? The cost advantage determines survival, who can improve the technology, efficiency, and reduce the cost as quickly as possible, who can laugh at the end.
